In ancient Japan, two women live by stealing weapons and armour from dead and dying soldiers. They also kill wounded soldiers to steal from them. One of the women is the mother-in-law of the other.
A friend of the son, Hachi, returns from the fighting. He tells the women that the son was killed. He is interested in the young woman, and they begin a passionate relationship. The mother does not want to be abandoned, so she tries to frighten the young woman using a demon mask.
The entire film is shot in a field of pampas grass (susuki) which is higher than the heads of the actors.
Although the film is classified as a "horror" film it doesn't seem to be one. Even more strangely it is described on more than one page as a "lyrical ghost story", "supernatural horror", or "costume horror", which it isn't, so many web pages are just copying one from the other without watching the film.
Unsolved mystery: I found from a lot of web pages that the film is supposedly based on a Buddhist legend, but none of the web pages I have found so far happens to mention what the legend might be. If you know what the Buddhist legend is, please let me know.
