Matsuda Yusaku Tribute ~as Shunsaku Kudo CD-ROM

This page is about a CD-ROM connected with the 1979-1980 Japanese Tantei Monogatari TV series. The CD is entitled "松田優作 Tribute ~as Shunsaku Kudo" (Matsuda Yūsaku), published by 東映ビデオ株式会 社 (Toei Video Corporation). The CD-ROM was published in 1999. As new it comes with five postcards of Yusaku Matsuda in the "Tantei" garb.

There are two CD-ROMs which contain the entire scripts and dialogue for all the episodes of the series (a lot of the dialogue for the TV show was rewritten on the set or ad-libbed). It also contains music for the series.

The CD requires "QuickTime" to be installed. It has version 3 of QuickTime on it, but it will work with more modern versions. It is extremely annoying to use, since each time the CD-ROM is accessed, it is necessary to sit through the entire one and a half minutes of the Tantei Monogatari theme music before being able to access anything on the disc. Once inside there is a menu with a choice of music and clips as well as "Scenario" (the Japanese name for the scripts and dialogue transcripts). Sometimes clicking on something requires inserting the other CD-ROM. Exasperatingly, there is no way to cancel this so one is forced to either insert the other CD-ROM or kill the programme entirely.

A final annoyance is that the CD-ROM insists on taking complete control of the screen, so that, for example, it is not possible to watch the programme and look at the dialogue at the same time.
