The picture on the left is a screen capture of Tantei Monogatari TV series, episode 12, 9 minutes 15 seconds into the episode. In the background we can see a shop called " ミラノ ボウル" (Milano Bowl) and on its right there is what looks like a branch of the British hamburger chain Wimpy - a Wimpy bar. This TV programme was filmed in 1979. So, it seems that Wimpy had a branch in Tokyo in 1979, but despite searching for more clues on the internet, the story of the Japanese Wimpy bar is lost to history. Around this time in the UK, Wimpy served what used to be called "beefburgers", which, unlike McDonalds and other American hamburgers which are popular nowadays, were sort of grey coloured and consisted not just of beef but also flavourings such as onion. Did the Japanese Wimpy bar serve the British style Wimpy burgers or a more Japanese version of the burger? If you have any information about the Wimpy chain in Japan, please send an email to the address at the bottom of the page.
There is still a bowling alley called "ミラノ ボウル" in Shinjuku in Tokyo, as seen on the Google streetview on the right. See their website at ミラノボウル. The logo with the ホ written with two circles looks almost the same as in the picture, and in the TV programme, just after the screen capture on the right, it also shows "58 lanes", so it probably is the same place, unchanged for thirty years. Where the Wimpy was seems now to be a Mos Burger.
