Errata for Topology of Plane Sets by MHA Newman
Errata for MHA (Max) Newman's book "Elements of the Topology of Plane Sets of Points", second edition. The copy I have was printed in 1951. I don't think the book had another edition, but these errors may have been corrected in subsequent printings. Negative line numbers are lines counted from the bottom of the page upwards.
- Page 27, line -6: Obviously \(Q_2\) should be \(Q^2\) at the beginning of the line.
- Page 29, line 3 in problem 4: The "hint" for the problem is wrong, \(EG\subseteq F\) doesn't imply \(\overline{E}G\subseteq F\). For example if \(F=EG\) and \(\overline{E}\) contains some point not in \(E\) but in \(G\) then obviously Newman's statement is false. On the real number line for example if \(E=(0,1)\) and \(G=(-1,1)\) and \(F=(0,1)\) then \(\overline{E}G=[0,1)\nsubseteq F\). Newman may have omitted an overline over the \(F\) or he may have neglected to mention that \(F\) must be a closed set.
