Boy Erased (2018)

Frustrating to watch

It's a story about a young man who undergoes "gay conversion therapy", a religion-based attempt to change him from homosexuality to heterosexuality.

The story is told using flashbacks, with the initial scene being of him arriving at the conversion camp. I didn't think that such a non-linear method was necessary for this story. It actually got more and more frustrating to watch this and try to work out what was supposed to be happening and why.

A lot of reviews on IMDB seem to discuss and rate the film as if they are discussing the actual events. For example, some ratings and reviews for The Dam Busters are "what we think of the aerial raid" rather than "what we think of the film". Looking at the reviews for this picture, that seems to apply in spades, people seem to be casting votes to show their opinion about gay conversion therapy rather than to rate the actual content of the film.
