Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Cutesy mental-illness themed romantic comedy

It's essentially a romantic comedy with a mental-illness theme, with two extremely good-looking stars, and the mental illnesses made into a kind of adorable eccentricity. The assumption is that under the mental illness is a basically decent, sane person who's a little bit "whacky" at times. Unfortunately that is not what mentally-ill people are actually like.

I grew up with two mentally-ill parents. Mental illnesses aren't cute, and they aren't lovable, and they aren't eccentricities, or people behaving "a little bit whacko", and unfortunately there isn't a sane, decent, lovable person inside the mentally-ill person just waiting to be discovered.

I very strongly disliked this film for romanticising and trivialising mental illness.
