The Mustang (2019)

Good lead makes up for workaday story

It's the same old story all over again, hard-luck case gets a second chance thanks to working with horses, and then he repays his debt to the horse by freeing him just before he's due to be put down.

The sub-plot about ketamine is shown up by the lame narrative device of having the character who gets killed due to drug dealing be too nice and too friendly - we're sure he's due to be offed.

Bruce Dern is good as the obnoxious but heart-in-the-right-place horse trainer.

The lead actor's performance somehow manages to make the whole thing work.

One thing to note, a mustang is a wild horse, so "wild mustang" is a tautology.
