American Gigolo (1980)

Unsatisfying thriller and love story

Richard Gere is a male escort who entertains older women. He's pulled into a murder case and a romance with a married woman.

It started off really well with some glimpses of his work and lifestyle.

It didn't particularly work as a love story, perhaps because the woman does all the pursuing, initially paying Richard Gere to sleep with her.

As a thriller it was also rather sleepy. About two thirds of the way in to the film it starts to get a bit ridiculous and frustrating, and at the end nothing is really tied up. I have to add spoilers to explain why.

The policeman is convinced that Gere has committed the murder for no apparent reason. The ending where the woman who started off paying for sex with Gere now loves him enough to provide an alibi, in the process ruining her marriage and her husband's career is not very satisfying. A huge plot hole is that it's not clear why the husband of the dead woman participated in the framing of Gere and getting the blonde boy off the hook. And why would Gere want to steal a small amount of money and some jewellery from the woman? We also don't find out what actually happened to the woman.

It was OK.
