The Harder They Fall (2021)

Falls completely flat

It's a revenge western about a boy in search of his parents' killers. The twist is that the cast is all-black.

It's well made, but as a film it falls totally flat. The action sequences aren't very exciting, and the sequences which the film makers seem to think, judging from the musical accompaniment, will be moving, just aren't.

The acting quality is quite variable from very good (Idris Elba, Delroy Lindo), to embarrassingly bad (Zazie Beetz). The sets are beautifully done but look completely fake, and sometimes verge on the ridiculous, such as the extremely white coloured bank in the "white town", which might be why this film left me so cold.

The dialogue is just ridiculous, which is another problem with the whole thing. The characters talk to each other as if they're comparing their yo-yos or something, so you're in the middle of people killing each other over some money, and you have these people "trash talking" each other, which drains all the tension out of the scene.

Better luck next time.
