Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

Quentin's playing with his toys again

Quentin Tarantino playing with actors and sets like a child playing with toys, completely self-indulgent.

There are opportunities here for interesting scenes, such as how will the Bride escape from the coffin, but Quentin ruins any tension by suddenly giving her superpowers to get herself out.

Similarly there is what Quentin apparently thought was "the greatest fight scene ever" which is not so much a fight scene as something resembling a child playing with toy soldiers by pulling the limbs off them. There's no tension, no danger, partly because Uma Thurman doesn't have enough acting ability to pull off a fight scene, and partly because it's so utterly obvious that she has "super powers" and cannot be defeated in a fight.

The crap about swords and Bill and the Pussy Wagon and the fight with Vermita were all similarly groan-worthy self-indulgence.

The one thing which did seem to have promise was the Daryl Hannah character.
