Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

Self-indulgent and unengaging nonsense

Quentin Tarantino plays with actors and sets like a child playing with toys. It's self-indulgent, and I never once felt engaged with any of the characters.

For example, what Quentin apparently thought was "the greatest fight scene ever", where Uma Thurman fights a horde of gangsters, is not so much a fight scene as something resembling a child playing with toy soldiers by pulling the limbs off them. There's no tension, and the lead character is clearly never in any danger. That's partly because Uma Thurman doesn't have enough acting ability to pull off a fight scene, and partly because she has "super powers" such as being able to put a sword into people without even looking at them, or avoid a sword thrust she can't even see, using ESP or something.

The same thing is repeated over and over throughout the film, scenes which seem to be there only to indulge some whimsy or another, and the end result is silly nonsense where the viewer does not care about any of the characters or feel even slightly engaged.
