Bullitt (1968)

OK police thriller

It's a quite good police thriller. The plot is not particularly special.

The film is very stylish, from the graphic design of the opening titles, to the jazz-based score, to the wardrobe of the main character Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen).

I enjoyed seeing what San Francisco looked like in 1968.

The car chase is shot with the camera very low and it looks alarmingly realistic, although the conclusion makes one wonder what the point of the whole thing was in terms of the plot.

McQueen's girlfriend played by Jaqueline Bissett is an astonishingly beautiful woman.

I did not like McQueen's acting in the film. McQueen seems to not be reacting to the other actors when he does things like rolling his eyes downwards, it doesn't look natural. Another opinion though, I watched the film with my late aunt, Phyllis Kenny, who was a theatre actress, and she didn't agree; she thought Steve McQueen's performance was absolutely brilliant.

Overall it's quite a good thriller, very stylish and beautifully made, but it's just another police story. Recommended if you're mad about Steve McQueen, like my aunt.
