First Man (2018)

I learnt a lot about Armstrong

It was a very engaging film because it showed a selection of scenes from the life of Neil Armstrong which told us a lot about him which I hadn't known.

Scenes of Armstrong coolly facing horrifyingly dangerous situations before he became an astronaut helped understand what it was which made him chosen to be on the first mission to land on the moon.

Armstrong's exceptional thoroughness in training for the landing, and the actual landing scene where it was touch and go whether they would be able to find a landing spot, were interesting scenes.

We also learnt a lot about Armstrong's family relationships.

When this came out, there was some criticism of this for not showing American flags on the moon, but I didn't find that omission particularly jarring. The film is a character study of a single person, rather than the overall story of the moon landings.

However, I don't really see what the point was of including a clip of "Whitey's on the Moon" in this, except to try to be "right on" or something.
