It's based on a book of the same title which is a true story of the experience of a man forced into slavery.
I'm not sure how possible it would be to film the book exactly as written, but I think it is a more interesting account than this film.
Some parts were just invented for the film. The scene where Solomon walks past a hanging is not in the book. Other scenes have been given a treatment which I think doesn't really represent the story told in Solomon Northrup's book.
I also felt that the performances of the cast were not very impressive, I think it's difficult to identify with any of the characters in the film or feel engaged in the situation.
